Homecoming Game Clip: Nevada v. UNLV

We may have let them take the cannon this year--but next year we will be back with a vengeance!

One Community, One Pack

As a Junior, this week was my third Homecoming experienced in my college career. It was by far the best Homecoming and quite possibly the best week ever! Despite the loss against our big rival, UNLV, the University of Nevada showed an immense amount of school spirit, pride and joviality throughout the week.

I will never forget when I visited Nevada during my college search in high school. One aspect of the University that greatly stood out to me is the amount of school spirit each student has.

Walking through campus was like walking through a Nevada Bookstore advertisement. Everywhere I looked I saw someone in Wolf Pack shirts, hats, sweatshirts. I love how much the students and community at Nevada show pride in their school.

This week’s Homecoming was no disappointment to the great school spirit Nevada shows.

Great events all week led up to one out of control and crazy fun football game. On Friday, the students participated their annual homecoming parade, but this year the ASUN chose to have the parade start at the Reno Arch and move through downtown up to campus. It was a great success. People of all ages came to support the floats made by students and rally for the game the following day.

I had the great opportunity to ride on one of the floats and I had never smiled so much in my life. Downtown Reno and the University came together for the great event. I hope they continue the tradition and start the parade downtown every year.

Saturday’s game was sold out with a record 32,500 people in attendance! The game was close and kept everyone on their feet eager to see who was going to bring home the canon.

Despite Nevada’s loss (22-27), the Pack showed that they are an overall amazing school (far better than UNLV). We are one community, one pack. We stick together, we have pride in our school and we make the best out of our college experience.

Thank you Nevada for an amazing Homecoming week!

Beat UNLV Week!

Homecoming Events UPDATE: Nominee's Pageant

Here is a little something, albeit not the best quality picture quickly captured from last night's event. It ran like a normal beauty pageant, but with the nominees from the sorority and fraternity houses on campus as well as few clubs. We decided to go last minute, hence the sub par seats and iPhone quality shot--but the good thing is, it was a GREAT turn out and more support than ever for yet another homecoming event!

GO PACK!

Oh and just a quick hello from your Pack City Girls headed to the event that night! :)

Homecoming Event's UPDATE: Undie Run!

The undie run was in full force tonight! Hundreds of people, dressed in some outrageous outfits, or almost barely anything at all, met in front of the Joe Crowley Student Union. There was live music and dancing--resembling quite convincingly what one might see as far as lack of clothing and type of music at a dubstep or EDM concert.

Though remember this is for a good cause--the student take off their clothes and donate them while running for charity to benefit the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada.

The Battle to Keep the Fremont Cannon Blue!

A rivalry between the University of Nevada-Reno and UNLV that dates back to 1969, this 8-year domination by Nevada is the longest command either team has had during this series existence. After coming off a devastating loss to Boise and an overall season of below .500 with a record sitting at a dismal 3-4, Nevada looks to bounce back during the festive homecoming week and capture the win, locking down the Fremont cannon for a 9th straight year.

The Fremont cannon itself has quite a bit of history—built in 1970 to replicate the 19th century cannon that American explorer and politician John C. Fremont on an expedition to Nevada mid-century. This cannon was originally fired after every touchdown, but was deemed inoperable since 1999. This is the heaviest, as well as the MOST expensive in all of college football.

The first win of this streak happened on September 17th, 2005 with Nevada over UNLV 22-14 and our last win over UNLV in Vegas on October 13, 2014, Nevada taking out UNLV 23-15.

Make sure you don’t miss this exciting game, Saturday, October 26! Chris Ault Field—University of Nevada—Reno, 3:05PST

The Nevada Wolf Pack played nearly perfectly the first half of their game against Boise on Oct. 19, 2013 at Bronco Field. The Pack led the game 17-7 at half time, giving the pack and the fans high confidence for the rest of the game. Nevada had not led Boise at half-time in a game since 1997! However, the Pack was unable to hold their lead and shortly after the beginning  of the second half, fell short to the Broncos.

Boise’s first two possession of the second half resulted in touchdowns and the Broncos sealed the deal with two more touchdowns to confirm a final score of 34-17.

Nevada receiver Brandon Wimberly led the Pack with 121 yards for 11 catches. Bronco’s backup quarterback Grant Hedrick threw for 150 yards and ran for 115 more after starting QB Joe Southwick injured his foot the first play of the game.

The Pack will take on UNLV in Reno for their homecoming game on October 26 at 3 pm.

Controversial Video Taken Down--No Saving the Savior of the Student Section

In our first post, we highlighted a brand new video that had just been released in honor of the 2013 football season titled "Savior of the Student Section: Nevada’s J.C", made by students of University of Nevada. After hitting almost 18,000 views, and landing a feature on the popular college website www.brobible.com, it was taken down. This was allowed on the grounds that it had used the university's logo without the proper approval. There was also talk that many within the community has assumed it was created by the university itself--mostly impart because of its high-quality production, while also containing the Nevada logo at the end.

The controversial video was given such a title thanks to a portion of its content--statements said against UNLV; like the school to the south being a "waste of state funds", and a broom donning a UNLV shirt, being pushed down by J.C.

A few students we've talked to said that there was quite a bit of overreaction when regarding the message behind this video--the actual writer/director/producer himself sharing that it was all made in good fun--as with any rivalry.

In our opinion, if you look at just the basic components to the video itself you can easily see too much weight was placed on those few scenes of this video--basically blowing it all way out of context. It a guy, obviously dressed as a figurative Jesus character, taking on a role as the "savior of the student section"...how much of this video could you possibly take too seriously without looking as if you have almost no sense of humor? Just an honest question for you to ponder from your pack city girls. :)

This hasn't silenced our "savior" though--as he warns the critics this isn't the last!

Pre-Season Pushing The Pack Back?

Nevada fans knew the Pack’s first two away games of their 2013 season were not going to be easy. At the beginning of the season both UCLA and FSU were predicted to be top 10 BCS competitors. The two teams haven’t fallen short of their expectations. FSU is currently ranked #2 in the BCS standings (As of October 21) and UCLA is shortly behind at #12.

Let’s not forget that the Wolf Pack lost to UCLA by 38 points and FSU by 55 points, proving why Nevada is far from being nationally ranked or even ranked in their conference.

However, the Wolf Pack schedule is quite surprising with some hard losses but also a couple good wins. Take Hawaii for example, The Pack beat the away team easily with a final score of 31-9.

When looking at Hawaii’s schedule one would see that Hawaii, also, lost to Oregon State with a score of 33-14. If the Pack beat Hawaii by more points than Oregon State, then why is Oregon State ranked #25 and Nevada is far from even making any top #50 ranking?

The Pack was so pushed back by their first two away games, UCLA and FSU, that the team lost their motivation. It is great for Nevada to play better teams than them during pre-season but #2? That game only killed Nevada’s confidence and the extra loss pushed the team to think their year won’t be any different from last year (we all remember the, then #1, Oregon Ducks destroying Nevada 69-20).

Next year I would like to see Nevada play some pre-season games against a team more on our level (and maybe a home game to boost our national recognition)!

Post Game Wrap-Up: Nevada 44, SDSU 51

The post game press conference for the Nevada Wolf Pack after a devastating loss in overtime to San Diego State. Head coach Brian Polian, QB Cody Fajardo and defensive lineman Jordan Hanson address the media after the game.

"There are no moral victories, there's no medals for trying...we had the chance to win the game but we couldn't make the plays to do it." - head coach Brian Polian on the loss.

The Nevada Wolf Pack battled back after being down 21 points in the first half to force overtime, but it wasn't enough after the Aztecs Quinn Kaeler completed a 13 yard pass to Eric Judge for the first TD in OT and Nevada just couldn't answer.

This was a high scoring game--SDSU over Nevada 51 to 44, so the question of what the defense may need to do in order to try and get those 3rd down conversions as well as just stop the oppositions running game may be a question on the mind of Wolf Pack fans.

"[On the Nevada defense being where it needs to be] No, and throughout the whole year there is always going to be room for improvement...our defense definitely needs improvement and it's not just because we lost."--Jordan Hanson, defensive lineman.

Nevada may go home licking their wounds, and with an extra week to do so they look bounce back and start focusing on their next opponent which is also one that is going to test their strengths, when they take on Boise State University on October 19th.
